TROY, NY – Five months have passed since Devils players occupied ice in the Capital Region. Almost two weeks after the start of New Jersey Devils training camp, players skated at Knickerbacker Ice Arena in Troy, NY Saturday afternoon. The group consisted of 20 players, including 15 which were assigned to Albany Friday. Alexandre Carrier, Artem Demkov, Dmitry Goldenkov, Harry Young and Kelly Zajac were also present.
“We’ll get to look at them a little bit,” said Head Coach Rick Kowalsky. “Carrier, I’ve seen a little bit before and the two Russian kids (Demkov and Goldenkov), I have not. We’ll get an opportunity to look at those guys and still evaluate on some of the young guys who we had in New Jersey as well. Obviously, we know that this week turns into the next week when players start to trickle down [from New Jersey]. The big clubs still has close to two teams up there. We’ll just keep doing what we are doing here.”
With 15 days remaining until the beginning of the regular season — Albany begins on the road with a 3 pm game at Hartford on Sunday, Oct. 6 — Kowalsky is following New Jersey’s lead with the flow of practice.
“You just take it day by day,” Kowalsky said. “We are still going to implement our systems and work on stuff. Pete DeBoer got into systems right away and I think that’s a great thing to do. We followed suit once we got on the ice. The plan is to have them in as good as shape, as ready to go and get everyone on the same page by the time the first weekend in October rolls around.”
After off-ice training Sunday, the team returns to the ice Monday morning.
