BRIDGEPORT, CT – A combined effort by both Keith Kinkaid and Scott Wedgewood helped the Albany Devils blank the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 3-0, Saturday at Webster Bank Arena for the team’s sixth shutout of the season. Stefan Matteau, Kelly Zajac and Chris McKelvie each scored and Alexander Urbom added a pair of assists, as the Devils improve to 25-15-3-4.
Kinkaid stopped all 16 shots faced through the first 38:41 of the contest before leaving the ice after being shaken up on a play at the end of the second period. Wedgewood finished off, saving all 12 shots on goal. The Devils are now 6-1-0-1 against Bridgeport this season.
Stefan Matteau opened the scoring at 15:40 of the first period. After a beautiful passing sequence between Kelly Zajac and Mike Hoeffel in the Bridgeport zone, Matteau found Zajac’s pass just outside the crease and tipped it in on the near-side post.
Zajac picked up his second point of the game after scoring on the power play, a blast from the high slot at 14:26 of the middle frame. Urbom and Adam Larsson posted the helpers on Zajac’s seventh tally of the season.
Albany added to its lead when McKelvie found his own rebound in the low slot and beat Sound Tigers netminder Anders Nilsson. The goal was the wingers seventh of the season. Urbom, who registered his second point of the night, and Eric Gelinas posted the assists.
The Devils and Sound Tigers each registered 28 shots, and Albany went 1-2 on the power play and killed all four penalties faced.
Albany returns to action Sunday for a 3 pm contest against the Manchester Monarchs at Verizon Wireless Arena. Fans can follow the action online at ahllive.com or on the air at 104.5 “The Team” ESPN Radio.
