Devils Can’t Capture Penguins, Lose 4-1
ALBANY, NY – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins established a lead in the second period and held on for a 4-1 win against the Albany Devils Tuesday night at the Times Union Center. Tyler Eckford scored for the Devils, but the Penguins capitalized on 2-of-7 power-play opportunities.
The Penguins received goals from Dustin Jeffrey, Ryan Craig, Andrew Hutchinson and Eric Tangradi to improve to 12-2-0-0 and remain atop the East Division. Goaltender Brad Thiessen, who entered the game with a 1.84 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage, kept his record unblemished with 18 stops. He is now 8-0-0-0 on the year.
Devils’ goaltender Jeff Frazee was tested 32 times and he made 28 stops in his ninth game of the season. He made 14 saves in the first, 13 in the second five in the third. Albany is now 6-9-0-0 on the year.
Eckford’s goal was his first of the season and 11th of his three-year career. Adam Henrique and Michael Swift each earned assists – their second of the season.
The Devils’ goal came when the trio worked the puck high in the offensive zone while operating a 5-on-3 power play. Henrique set up Eckford for a one-time blast and the shot sailed past the outreaching glove of Thiessen at 3:47.
In response, Jeffrey evened things with a Penguins’ power-play tally at 10:44. After receiving a pass from Hutchinson, Jeffrey walked in from the left side and snapped a wrist shot past Frazee.
Craig registered his fourth tally of the season with the deciding goal at 2:42 of the second with an assist going to Chris Collins.
Hutchinson followed with the team’s second power-play goal at 8:26 of the same period and Tangradi capped the scoring at 5:50 of the third. Jeffrey had helpers on both goals and Collins earned the second assist on Hutchinson’s tally. Tim Wallace had the second assist on Tangradi’s goal.
