Devils Delight Home Crowd
Albany, NY – The Albany Devils jumped out to a lead against the Portland Pirates Saturday and never looked back. Albany snapped Portland’s three-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory in front of a Home Opening crowd of 5,335 at Times Union Center.
Reid Boucher got the Devils on the board in the second period with his first of the season. Mike Sislo made a behind the back pass to Boucher in the slot, who fired a backhand over Portland goaltender Sam Brittain‘s shoulder at 9:10.
Blake Pietila added his third goal of the season by deflecting a Seth Helgeson slap shot into the net at 17:36 of the second period. It was Pietila’s third consecutive game with a goal.Marc-Andre Gragnani picked up his team-leading third assist on the play.
The Devils made it 3-0 with their fourth power-play tally of the season when Jim O’Brien scored at 4:38 of the third. Corey Tropp battled in front of the net to recover the rebound onReece Scarlett‘s shot then made a between the legs, no look pass to O’Brien who had an empty net to shoot into. The Devils finished 1-6 on the power-play, while Portland was 0-4.
Yann Danis made 20 saves to stifle the Portland offense, including several sprawling pad saves when the games was 1-0 in the second. It was Danis’ second win this season.
The Devils dictated play throughout the game outshooting the Pirates 12-5 in the first, 12-8 in the second and 8-8 in the third for a final of 32-21.
The Devils return to the ice Sunday at 3pm at the Times Union Center against Binghamton.
