CROMWELL, CT — The Albany Devils get to fine tune their game one last time during preseason action Sunday when they travel to face the Hartford Wolf Pack at 1 pm at Champions Skate Center in Cromwell, CT. The Devils open the 2016-17 campaign Friday at Providence.
• WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Setting The Lineup: While last Thursday’s game included seven of the team’s eight tryout players, expect Sunday’s lineup to be closer to what will be on the ice at Providence Friday. Carter Camper, Brandon Gormley, Andrew MacWilliam, Vojtech Mozik, Rod Pelley, Blake Pietila and Karl Stollery will likely play.
“We’ll probably get closer to what our Opening Night roster will look like,” said Head Coach Rick Kowalsky. “All the guys who didn’t play [Thursday] will get in and it will be a decision on whether a guy like [Blake] Coleman, who played three games at the NHL level and now one here, maybe give him a rest. Maybe some of the guys like [Reece] Scarlett, who played a fair amount of minutes. It will be more of an American League lineup.”
Between The Pipes: Ken Appleby will play a full game after Mackenzie Blackwood went the distance during Thursday’s 4-1 win at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Appleby, who signed an entry-level contract almost one year ago, appeared in eight AHL games last season, going 3-3-1 with a 2.59 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage.
Back To Their Roots: Champions Skate Center is not quite the Times Union Center or XL Center, but the community rink should provide a good atmosphere for this warm-up game. Admission is just $5 and proceeds will benefit Whalers Youth Hockey.
