ALBANY, NY – Playoff hockey isn’t just about what happens on the ice for 60 minutes. There is gamesmanship to everything that takes place from Game 1 of the First Round to Game 7 of the Calder Cup Finals.
There will certainly be a feeling-out process between the Devils and Comets early in their series, which begins Friday at 7 pm at Times Union Center. Right now, the attention appears to be on who will be in the lineup for the Devils … and the Comets.
“We have some time here during the week,” said Head Coach Rick Kowalsky “We may take a more extensive look at what their lineup may potentially look like. I don’t even know if we can go off their last game either. We may insert a guy here or there depending on health, depending on who they have in the lineup. After that, it’s going to be a game-by-game basis.”
For Games 1, 2 and 5 (if necessary) the Devils will have home-ice advantage. With that they will have the chance to make any last minute changes after viewing the Comets’ lineup.
“We have the option of whoever our 21st guy in warmup is putting him in maybe ahead of someone else,” Kowalsky said. “I think both teams will have a pretty good idea what their lineups will look like before that day. It used to always be if the visiting team played their tough guy, then your tough guy went in. It’s not quite like that anymore.”
The Devils are scheduled to practice Wednesday at 10 am at Times Union Center where the lineup questions will continue to be asked.
