SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Albany Devils were shutout, 3-0, by the Springfield Thunderbirds Sunday at MassMutual Center. The Devils record moves to 34-26-2-2. The Thunderbirds record improves to 27-27-8-2.
After a scoreless first period, Ed Whittchow got Springfield on the board first at 5:17 of the second period by slipping a shot from the near side circle past Devils netminder Mackenzie Blackwood. It was Whittchow’s first American Hockey League goal and was assisted by Kyle Rau and Anthony Greco.
Greco furthered the Thunderbirds lead on a shorthanded, unassisted goal at 1:13 of the third period after a turnover in the Devils zone. He got his second tally of the night, securing the 3-0 shutout, with 48 seconds to go in regulation on an empty net goal. Rau and Ian McCoshen earned the assists on the play.
Blackwood turned aside 22 of 24 shots and moves his record to 13-11-3. Springfield goalie Adam Wilcox improves his record to 22-10-4 after stopping all 34 shots he faced.
The Devils return home for a Wednesday matchup against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Face off is at 7 pm at Times Union Center.
