ALBANY, NY – The Albany Devils will try and extend their point streak to seven games when they welcome the Portland Pirates to Times Union Center Saturday at 5 pm. Albany, which is 3-0-0-0 at home, is in search of its sixth victory in just its eighth game.
– The Devils are tied for first in the Northeast Division and tied for third in the Eastern Conference with a 5-1-0-1 record (11 pts). The Pirates are fourth in the Atlantic Division and 13th in the conference with a 1-3-0-1 mark (3 pts). Albany is 3-0-0-0 at Times Union Center, while Portland is 1-1-0-0 on the road.
– With a power-play goal during Albany’s 4-3 win against Hartford Friday, Jon Merrill ranks first among rookie defensemen with six points, backed by two goals and four assists. His point total ranks tied for seventh among all league defensemen and tied for fifth among rookies.
– Mike Hoeffel and Stefan Matteau both registered their first goals of the season Friday. Hoeffel scored from a low-percentage angle at 17:34 of the first period and Matteau scored on a wrist shot from the left wing at 4:04 of the second.
– Miele leads the Pirates with eight points with five goals and three assists. Brandon Gormley is second with five points – all assists.
Devils vs. Pirates Series
Saturday’s meeting will be the 45th all-time between the two franchises. The Devils are 16-19-1-8 all-time against the Pirates, including an 8-8-0-6 home mark and an 8-11-1-2 road record. Last season, Albany was 0-1-0-1 against Portland.
The teams last met on Mar. 20, 2013 at Times Union Center. Mike Sislo had two goals and an assist, while Reid Boucher had a goal and a pair of helpers in the team’s 5-4 shootout loss. Albany and Portland will meet again at Times Union Center on Dec. 28. Games at Androscoggin Bank Colisée on Mar. 7 and Apr. 18.
A point Saturday would tie Scott Timmins with Niclas Bergfors for the second longest point streak in team history. Timmins has points in all seven games this year, registering four goals and five assists.
