If Jon Merrill is removed from IR, a player could be returned to Albany.
ALBANY, NY – The health of the New Jersey Devils greatly impacts the Albany Devils lineup. A couple of weeks ago Joseph Blandisi, Reid Boucher and Seth Helgeson were major contributors on the AHL team. Now they are in the NHL lineup.
How it works is, NHL teams are allowed to have 23 players on their active roster – there are no restrictions in the AHL. New Jersey can place a player on injured reserve if a player is sidelined for a minimum of seven days. This is a way to free up roster space and field a complete team.
Merrill has resumed skating with the team and was paired with Helgeson during Thursday’s practice. If Merrill comes off IR than another player must go on IR or New Jersey must send a player to Albany.
Which direction the NHL Devils decide to go is unknown, but it’s something to watch heading into New Jersey’s 7 pm contest against the New York Islanders.
