Jon Merrill's rookie season was spent mostly in the NHL. The 22-year-old appeared in 52 games with New Jersey and posted two goals and nine points. In dramatic fashion, he netted his first career goal on Feb. 7 against Edmonton in overtime.

In the AHL, Merrill, who was selected 38th overall during the 2010 NHL Draft, played 15 games and had two goals and eight assists. During four playoff games, he registered a goal and an assist.

What Was Said by Merrill...

You always dream about that kind of stuff when you’re a little kid, and I think after 20 games went by and I hadn’t scored, those dreams kind of went away a little bit and I just worried about playing,” said Merrill, who hadn’t scored in his first 30 NHL games. “I knew it would come when it came and tonight it did. Jon Merrill on first NHL goal (February 7, 2014)

What Was Said About Merrill...

He’s the real deal. I thought he was outstanding in Carolina. When he’s not in the lineup we miss him. He has a rare ability, with the composure to make plays under pressure, to never panic with the puck and always be in the right position. Everything a coach is looking for from any age player, never mind a young kid coming into the lineup. Pete DeBoer (April 7, 2014)
