Devils Hold Tough In Gritty Win

ALBANY, NY -- Although he wasn’t officially credited with the game-winning goal, Jeff Frazee arguably made the game-changing play in the Albany Devils 2-1 win against the Adirondack Phantoms Saturday at Times Union Center in front of 5,131 fans. Frazee denied a backdoor play, leading to a fast break the other way. The sequence ended with Matt Andersonfinding the tiniest of openings at 3:41.

From there the Devils held strong, killing off two Adirondack power-plays, including one in the final three minutes. In the end, Albany skated away with a Time Warner Cable Cup win, improving to 2-1 in the best-of-12 series.

Frazee finished the night with 22 saves and improved his goals-against average to 1.48 and his save percentage to .929. He is now 2-1-1 on the year.

Bobby Butler gave the Devils a 1-0 lead with his first tally of the season. Matt Corrente moved the play forward with a pass to Joe Whitney, who found Butler cutting to the net. After receiving the pass, Butler fired a wrist shot far side at 13:44 of the second.

Adirondack responded with a short-side goal by Eric Wellwood at 17:37 of the second, but Albany answered with Anderson’s goal from Jacob Josefson and Chad Wiseman. It marked the first time this season the Devils were victorious when not leading entering the final frame.

After a day off Sunday, the Devils return to the Times Union Center ice Monday for a 2 pm contest against the defending Calder Cup Champions, the Norfolk Admirals. As a special way to say thanks during Veterans Day, the Devils are offering free admission to all veterans who show proper identification at the Times Union Center box office.

Storyline 

After exchanging wins during the past two weeks, the Albany Devils welcome the Adirondack Phantoms to Times Union Center for a 7 pm outing. The contest marks the third game of the best-of-12 series for the Time Warner Cable Cup. The Devils staked a 5-1 victory at home on Oct. 26 and the Phantoms claimed a 4-0 win at Glens Falls Civic Center on Nov. 3.

Notables 
- The Devils are fifth in the Northeast Division and 15th in the Eastern Conference with a 2-5-0-2 (6 pts.) record, while the Phantoms are third in the division and tied for eighth in the conference with a 5-5-0-0 (10 pts.) mark. Albany is 1-3-0-1 at Times Union Center, while Adirondack is 3-3-0-0 on the road.

- Albany is coming off a 2-1 shootout loss at the Providence Bruins Friday. Adam Henrique scored in regulation and Matt Anderson found the back of the net in the shootout. Goaltender Keith Kinkaid turned aside a season-high 37 shots and made three saves on five shootout attempts.

- Henrique’s goal against Providence was his third of the season. In 85 career AHL games, spanning three seasons, the 2012 NHL Rookie of the Year Award Finalist, has accumulated 28 goals and 26 assists for 54 points.

- Adirondack knocked off the Rochester Americans, 2-1, Friday. Danny Syvret scored on the power play and Garrett Roe netted the game-winning goal. Netminder Cal Heeter made 25 saves for his second win.

- Brayden Schenn leads the Phantoms with 11 points, including four goals and seven assists. Sean Couturier is second with 10 points with two goals and eight assists.

During the second game of the Time Warner Cable Cup, the Devils fell, 4-0, to the Phantoms at Glens Falls Civic Center. Keith Kinkaid, who made his fifth start, turned away 29 shots, including 10 in the first, 11 in the second and 8 in the third. The Phantoms scored down a man, with a man advantage, with a two-man advantage and at even strength. Sean Couturierscored shorthanded at 6:18 of the first and Ben Holmstrom made the score 2-0 on the power play at 13:20 of the second. In the third, Erik Gustafsson added to Adirondack’s lead with a two-man advantage at 9:19 and Shane Harper concluded the scoring at 16:03. Adirondack’s Scott Munroe earned the victory by turning away 26 shots.
