NEWARK – The New Jersey Devils went 2-for-2 during their split-squad preseason games Monday. Half the group defeated the Philadelphia Flyers, 2-0, at Prudential Center and the other half knocked off the Montreal Canadiens, 3-2, at Bell Centre.
Against the Flyers, Nick Lappin, who signed an entry-level deal for the start of this season back in March, netted a pair of goals. The first came near the top of the crease, off a rebound at 17:51 of the second period. Sergey Kalinin and Reece Scarlett picked up the assists.
Lappin’s second of the game came on an unassisted play from the neutral zone into the empty net at 19:28 to seal the victory.
Against the Canadiens, Adam Henrique matched Lappin’s effort. The Devils’ alternate captain made it a 1-1 game at 11:19 of the first period from Vojtech Mozik and Yohann Auvitu. He then gave the Devils the lead at 10:52 from Nathan Bastian and Auvitu. Both tallies came on the power play, helping the Devils to a 2-for-5 showing with the man advantage.
Montreal’s Zach Redmon scored at 16:58 to produce the final result.
Between the pipes, Scott Wedgewood made 26 of 27 saves, while Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 13 of 14 shots.
