What To Watch For

As the American Hockey League’s attention turns to the 2014 AHL All-Star Classic in St. John’s, the Albany Devils will enjoy a three day hiatus before returning to practice Thursday. The team hosts the Hershey Bears Friday at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall (7 pm), before welcoming the Adirondack Phantoms Saturday at Times Union Center (5 pm). The weekend concludes on the road against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Sunday at Webster Banks Arena (3 pm).

Joe Whitney will represent the Devils at the AHL All-Star Classic Tuesday and Wednesday. The event pits the AHL against Färjestad BK, one of the top professional teams in the Swedish Hockey League. This season, Whitney leads the Devils with 38 points, backed by a team-high 17 goals and 21 assists. He also leads the team with five power-play goals, 12 power-play points and four insurance goals.

After splitting this past weekend’s games, the Devils are second in the Northeast Division and ninth in the Eastern Conference at 25-16-3-4 (57 pts.) with a 13-8-2-0 home mark and a 12-8-1-4 road record.

On Saturday, New Jersey returned Jon Merrill to Albany. The rookie defenseman began the year in the AHL, producing two goals and seven assists in 14 contests. He has enjoyed two NHL recalls this season on Nov. 3 and Nov. 25. He has a goal and four assists in 32 NHL games. The 22-year-old netted his first NHL goal in overtime during New Jersey’s 2-1 win against Edmonton last Friday.
