Mozik Getting Closer: Vojtech Mozik, who has missed the last six games with an upper-body injury, is getting closer to returning to the Devils’ lineup. The 23-year-old traveled with the team to Toronto and St. John’s and was on the ice for the team’s practice Thursday. Although he is progressing, Head Coach Rick Kowalsky does not expect him to be in the lineup this weekend.
“I would say questionable for this weekend because of the fact with our travel, we haven’t been able to skate,” Kowalsky said.
Numbers Game: The Devils rank in the top five in at least nine different categories this season: wins (t-3), points percentage (3), goals-against average (2), shots-against average (2), power-play percentage (3), home power-play percentage (2), penalty kill (1), home penalty kill (3) and away penalty kill (5).
Travel A Factor Against Toronto: The Devils did not get the result or performance they were looking for against first-place Toronto during Tuesday’s 11 am “School Day” game. Kowalsky said the coaching staff was cautious with the way the game and travel schedule lined up.
“We were a little concerned as a coaching staff because of the travel and because we didn’t skate before coming into that game,” he said. “We tried to talk about playing simple and getting pucks behind. To their credit, they came out hard. We did not have our legs and they did. We just didn’t have any room to make plays. They were in our face for most of the first and the lot of the game.”
