Preview: Devils vs. Comets, 5 PM
ALBANY, NY – Coming off back-to-back overtime victories, the Albany Devils host the Utica Comets for a 5 pm start Saturday at Times Union Center. After a season-long six-game road trip, the Devils finally return home where they are 20-5-3-0.
Saturday’s game is a preview of a potential Calder Cup Playoffs matchup. The Devils sit in second place in the North Division with a 35-15-8-0 record (.672), while the Comets are in third with a 30-20-5-3 mark (.586).
What To Watch For
• Albany: Brian O’Neill has played the hero in the last two contests, scoring a pair of overtime goals. He capped an improbable comeback Friday at Binghamton after Matt Lorito tied the game, 2-2, with just 6.8 seconds remaining. O’Neill scored the winner just 19 seconds later for his ninth tally of the season and third game-winning goal. Scott Wedgewood is expected to return to the lineup after missing 16 games with a shoulder injury sustained on Jan. 27. The 23-year-old had missed significant time earlier this season with an ankle sprain, which occurred during training camp. Because of the two ailments, Wedgewood has only played in 12 games this season. He is 6-2-2 with a 1.67 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage.
• Utica: Before Friday’s 3-1 loss at Rochester, Utica had swept its three-in-three last weekend. The trio of victories included two against first-place Toronto Friday (4-0) and Sunday (5-4). Alexandre Grenier is the team’s active leader with 34 points, including 12 goals and 22 helpers. Defenseman Jordan Subban is next with 31 points, backed by 10 tallies and 21 assists.
Devils vs. Comets Series
• All-Time: The Devils and Comets are set to faceoff for their 13th all-time meeting. Albany is 10-0-2-0 with five wins at Times Union Center and five at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. This season, Albany is 4-0-2-0 against its neighbor to the west.
• Last Meeting: The Devils erased a two-goal deficit to force overtime and Matt Lorito netted the game-winning goal in a 3-2 Devils victory against the Comets on Feb. 20 at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. Lorito ended the game at 3:06 of the extra frame. Dan Kelly and Mike Sislo scored during regulation and Yann Danis* made 21 saves.
