ALBANY, NY – The Albany Devils mounted three comebacks this weekend for three more wins. They forced overtime with 6.8 seconds remaining at Binghamton Friday only to score the game-winning goals 12 seconds into the extra frame for a 3-2 victory. Albany then scored three goals in the third period to knock off Utica, 4-3, Saturday. Finally, after falling behind early, the Devils scored two power-play goals in the second period and then netted the game-winner in the closing seconds of regulation, beating Toronto, 3-2, Sunday.
Next up, the Devils host Providence Wednesday (7 pm) before back-to-back road games at Utica Saturday (7 pm) and at Bridgeport Sunday (5 pm).
Jim O’Brien led the Devils with six points, including two goals and four assists. He had a hand in all three of Albany’s goals at Binghamton and followed with a pair of goals against Utica. To cap the weekend, he assisted on the game-winning tally against Toronto. The 27-year-old was a +6 during the three games.
After signing his entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils and an ATO with Albany Thursday, Nick Lappin made his professional debut Friday. He assisted on the game-tying goal during that game and then scored his first career goal Saturday. He concluded the weekend with the game-winning goal with 39.5 seconds remaining in regulation Sunday.
Friday | Devils 3, Senators 2 (OT)
Matt Lorito forced overtime with 6.8 seconds remaining and Brian O’Neill netted the game-winning goal 19 seconds later to give the Devils a 3-2 victory against the Senators Friday at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena. Albany was on the brink of defeat after allowing two goals in the third period. Ken Appleby registered the win, making 23 saves. At the other end, Chris Driedger made 24 stops. Reece Scarlett was Albany’s other goal scorer.
Saturday | Devils 4, Comets 3
A three-goal third period propelled the second-place Devils to a 4-3 victory against the third-place Comets Saturday in front of 5,528 fans at Times Union Center. Jim O’Brien led the charge with a pair of tallies, Ben Thomson netted the eventual game-winner and Nick Lappin scored his first career goal. Scott Wedgewood returned to the lineup after missing 17 games with a shoulder injury sustained on Jan. 27. He made 16 stops.
Sunday | Devils 3, Marlies 2
Nick Lappin scored with 39.5 seconds remaining to give the Devils a 3-2 victory against the Marlies Sunday at Times Union Center. Raman Hrabarenka led the Devils’ scoring efforts with his third career two-goal game. Matt Lorito and Marc-Andre Gragnani also had multiple points, posting a pair of assists. Scott Wedgewood won for the second consecutive game; he had 17 saves.
